US Politics | Our new prime minister must build more nuclear power stations immediately – our energy production is a joke

LOW ENERGY CAST your mind back, if you can, to 1995. John Major had two years left as PM. Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League. Frank Bruno was world heavyweight champ. Oasis had their first No1. AFPDamningly, it took until Boris's final speech as PM to fund a nuclear plant '/ ' And Britain switched on what is still our newest nuclear power station. Some 27 long years then elapsed until yesterday when Boris Johnson finally put money into another — illustrating perfectly the shameful complacency of successive Labour and Tory Governments over securing our energy future. Their failure lies horribly exposed now as Putin cuts gas to Europe, our bills soar and our economy is destabilised exactly as Russia's tyrant planned. Labour had 13 years in power to establish long-term self-sufficiency and did nothing. The Lib-Dems, now proudly the NIMBYs' party, jointly held power for five years from 2010 and violently opposed nuclear power and fracking. Anyone sane knew we would need British-produced gas and nuclear too. But the Tories cannot dodge all blame. They have been in sole charge since 2015. Even allowing for Brexit and Covid, nothing is much more fundamental for any Government than to ensure the public can always afford heat and light. And they were warned. Again and again The Sun berated politicians "who stuck their heads in the sand" and needed to "secure Britain's energy future, free from flaky foreign powers". Damningly, it took until Boris's final speech as PM to fund a nuclear plant. His replacement MUST do better. That means more nuclear, more wind, more solar . . . and fracking for shale gas. All must get the nod rapidly. PANNICK: DON'T LABOUR has over-reached in its desperation to kick Boris out of Parliament. Even Brexit-hating QC Lord Pannick agrees. Harriet Harman's Commons committee tweaked its rules to be able to find Boris guilty of misleading MPs over Partygate even if he did so accidentally. But that would leave any minister, including future Labour ones, vulnerable to a similar probe, suspension and even a by-election for telling the Commons anything which proves mistaken. That cannot be a sacking offence. As Pannick says, it will paralyse democracy. Boris has already quit as PM, Ms Harman. Take the win and think again. DIRTY DOZEN HOW better for civil servants to empathise with skint Britain, and the drive to lower emissions, than by blowing £50,000 of public cash on a pleasure flight in Boris's jet? And don't tell us a maintenance trip needs a dozen Foreign Office suits. That's planely ridiculous.
