Actress Jennylyn Mercado lamented how health workers still need to ask for mandatory COVID-19 testing and better work schedules as they contine to work at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19.

“Nakakadismaya na kailangan pa talaga nila magdemand sa mga bagay na dapat kusang ibinibigay sa kanila,” Mercado tweeted in response to a report on nurses from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) demanding more protection from the disease.

(It is dismaying how they still have to demand things that should have been given to them voluntarily.)

Filipino Nurses United noted in a statement yesterday, July 24, that of the 303 PGH health workers who have contracted the novel coronavirus, 121 are nurses, two of whom have succumbed already to COVID-19.

One Twitter user @ribsep, meanwhile, replied to Mercado’s tweet, “[They’re] literally dying doing their job while earning little tapos kailangan pa magmakaawa para lang ma-test (yet they still need to beg to get tested).”

The actress then echoed the same sentiments, replying, “Yun yung pinakamasaklap dun. Kawawa ang ating medical frontliners (That is the worst thing about this. I pity our medical frontliners). They deserve better than this.”

In a previous tweet, Mercado also lamented about how corruption still exists even amid the global health crisis that has dealt a huge blow to the Philippines, which is still under the world’s longest lockdown.

“It really is disgusting na kahit may pandemya (that even when there is a pandemic) corruption still exists,” Mercado said in an INQUIRER report about the resignation of three PhilHealth officials.

The said officials left their posts out of disgust with widespread corruption issues within the agency.

“Kelan kaya matitigil ang pananamantala ng mga tao na may kapangyarihan sa ordinaryong Pilipino?” Mercado stressed in the following tweet.

(When will people in power ever stop taking advantage of ordinary Filipinos?)  /ra

MANILA, Philippines — Tech giant Google paid tribute to the Philippines’ “King of Comedy” Dolphy with a doodle to celebrate what would have been the comedian’s 92nd birth anniversary on Saturday, July 25.

Dolphy was cited for his contributions to the Philippine entertainment industry in a career spanning six decades, as he starred in “200 movies and multiple long-running television series.”

Dolphy, born Rodolfo Vera Quizon, was born in 1928 in Manila.

“Soon, what started as a modest childhood gig selling peanuts and watermelon seeds at movie theaters turned into a full-blown obsession with the performing arts. Able to watch movies for free, Quizon became fixated on the prospect of becoming an actor, which led him to land his first small movie role at age 19,” Google said of Dolphy.

Aside from finding success in the big screen, Dolphy also warmed the hearts of Filipinos by starring in two of the most beloved sitcoms in Philippine television, “John En Marsha” and “Home Along da Riles.”

Dolphy was also conferred with the Philippines’ Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart in 2010.

The legendary comedian died on July 10, 2012 —days before he turned 84—due to complications from pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Actor Alden Richards has one more thing to be grateful for as he tested negative for the coronavirus.

The “Eat Bulaga!” host showed his certification indicating that he was negative for the coronavirus after undergoing rapid testing, as seen on his Twitter post today, July 25. Richards’ fans rejoiced and prayed that the actor would remain healthy and safe.

Richards recently became the face of the Department of Health’s (DOH) campaign to battle the spread of the virus in the country, called “BIDA Solusyon sa COVID-19.”

BIDA,” a term used referring to lead actors in shows and movies, has been transformed into an acronym to remind citizens of quarantine protocols, namely wearing a face mask, maintaining social distancing, sanitizing one’s hands and avoiding misinformation about COVID-19 updates.

The actor has also been busy hosting the noontime variety TV show “Eat Bulaga!” after it resumed live studio tapings last June. The show put a pause on production last March in view of the pandemic.

Richards is one of the hosts of the show, which also includes Vic Sotto, Maine Mendoza, Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola and Paolo Ballesteros  among others.  /ra

We all dream. We all want to make it big some day. For those who do not give up on their dreams, achieving them is quite possible not only with hard work but with a stroke of luck. In light of this, young actress-singer Dani Porter is well aware that she is new to the entertainment industry and that fact has only fueled her to grab every opportunity given to her to showcase her developing acting and singing skills.

Dani Porter is one of the standouts of the seventh season of StarStruck in GMA Network. Although she did not win the reality talent search show, she managed to leave an indelible mark on the viewers–her feisty, tough, and quirky personality set her apart her. Since then, she has made appearances in various programs in GMA Network.

In many ways, Dani Porter reminds me a lot of Danita Paner who rose to fame in the mid-2000’s as a rock singer and actress. They share similarities in how they carry themselves, their choice of clothing and the “rock-star” aura about them. However, Dani Porter is her own unique person which will undoubtedly make her shine and will have people take notice of her and bet on what a promising future she could have given the right opportunities to showcase what she can do as an actress and singer.

Let us see what the future holds for the unique, pretty, and rocking Dani Porter.

Below is my interview with Dani Porter.

  1. Around how old were you when you realized that you wanted to have a career in acting and that this was something you were determined to pursue?

Dani Porter – I was 4 years old when I dreamed of being a model. But when I learned to appreciate movies and teleseryes, I realized how cool it would be to be able to act, too. It’s my dream to be an actress.

  1. What are your qualities which you feel set you apart from all the other young and talented actresses we have now?

Dani Porter – Lahat naman po ng actress and actors may kanya kanya pong talent. I don’t have too much experience and bata pa din po kasi. I need to have more experience pa din pero pagdating sa acting, kaya ko naman po yun na mas ma-improve pa.

  1. Do you prefer playing and portraying a good person or a bad person on television and movies? What is more natural to your personality?

Dani Porter – Both. I like to be the good one and lalo na the bad one.

  1. Of all the roles you have played so far, which is your favorite?

Dani Porter – My favorite role so far is yung pagiging kontrabida during my StarStruck days and duon sa “One of The Baes”.; I like to act kontrabida; parang ang cool nang feeling ko kasi nakakatanggal ng stress. Yun ganung role, mas napapakita ko yung acting skill ko kapag kontrabida. Basta wala lang po yung physical na sakitan, haha.

  1. Have you progressed in your acting career so far as you have expected?

Dani Porter – I think acting is one of my favorite things to do kasi ramdam ko na ito yung opportunity ko para mapakita ko na kaya ko. I know that the more experience I will have in acting, the better I will be at it.

  1. What kind of music do you like to listen to when you want to relax?

Dani Porter – My kind of music yung medyo Emo-Pop, Electro-Pop; yung type of Billie Eilish na re-relax ako sa music niya. Sometimes, I like Slow Rock also. Heavy Metal rock is not for me, it’s too noisy.

  1. When you are not taping, doing a photo shoot, endorsing a product or filming a movie, how do you usually spend your days off?

Dani Porter – Most of the time stay home lang talaga ako. Homebody talaga ako kahit wala pang lockdown. What I usually do is practice putting on make-up. I love different looks. I also practice my singing skill. I want to become a better singer. I want to also sing and not only act.

  1. What was the funniest thing that has happened to you during a taping of a program or in the filming of a movie?

I always make patawa kasi lahat sila seryoso.

  1. If there is one song that perfectly encapsulates who you are today, what song would that be?

Dani Porter – “Agos”. Ito po yung song na pinakanta sa akin after StarStruck. I love the meaning of the song kaya ito din yung napili ko na perfect for my personality. “Kahit anong pagsubok ang pagdaanan ko hindi ako bibitaw hindi ako mabubuwag at hindi ako susuko ang pag ibig ko sa pangarap ko ay nasa agos ng puso ko”.

  1. Do you have a nickname that you go by?

Dani Porter – My nicknames are “Tisay” and “Baby Rocks”.

  1. Who is Dani Porter in a nutshell?

Dani Porter – Dani Porter is maingay, pero matakot ka kapag tahimik na ako. Malambing pero minsan moody din. Sweet at kalog. Matapang pero iyakin.

Despite the health crisis that the world is experiencing now, local cinema operators are still hoping to resume operations in September. They also intend to push through with the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) in December.

This was according to MMFF spokesperson Noel Ferrer, with whom Inquirer Entertainment spoke on Tuesday about the announcement of the first four festival finalists that were chosen based on submitted scripts.

“We can’t be unprepared for the Christmas MMFF. Just like everyone, we wish for it not to be canceled this year,” Ferrer declared. “We’re working closely with the theater operators—they are one of the MMFF’s major partners.”

The four of eight finalists announced are the following: Chito Roño’s “Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan” (Regal Films), starring Joshua Garcia and Angie Ferro; Christian Acuña’s “Magikland” (Brightlight Leisure Productions/Gallaga Reyes Films), starring Jun Urbano and Miggs Cuaderno; “Praybeyt Benjamin 3” (ABS-CBN Film Productions Inc./Viva Communications Inc.), starring Vice Ganda (director and lead actress to be finalized); Fifth Solomon’s “The Exorcism of My Siszums” (Tincan), starring sisters Toni and Alex Gonzaga.

“Yes, September is their target,” declared Ferrer. Cinemas all over the country have been closed since the government imposed a lockdown in March. Mass gatherings are prohibited and social distancing is being enforced to help stop the spread of the deadly Covid-19.

“The operators have coordinated with movie companies and asked if they could release big films that the moviegoing public would patronize. Of course, they will still look into the health situation at that time and promise to follow protocols. Whatever the situation will be in December, at least the MMFF is ready.”

Meanwhile, Ferrer said the participating films of the canceled Summer MMFF 2020 will then have their slots in the 2021 edition. “But they will lose their reserved slots should they want to take their chance and be part of the Christmas MMFF selection for the finished film submission,” he explained.

The following dates are the deadlines for submission: Oct. 2 for the early bird and Oct. 15 for regular submission.

Ferrer also disclosed that one of the entries, the Alex Gonzaga-Xian Lim starrer “I Love the Way U Lie” has already “backed out” of the festival. However, Ferrer did not elaborate on why its producer Tincan decided to pull it out of the lineup.

Vice Ganda

“The Christmas MMFF finalists can now start filming, although I know that some of them are already in the postprod stage, like ‘Magikland,’ which happens to be a tribute to one of its producers, the late Peque Gallaga,” Ferrer reported.

“The same selection committee members, headed by Sir Bien (National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera), picked this year’s entries, which I personally think are good ones,” said Ferrer.

Can we also expect to see the crowd-puller MMFF Parade of the Stars on Dec. 23? “It will all depend on what the government will allow us to do at that time,” Ferrer explained. “Let’s be optimistic. Some people are saying that there might already be a vaccine by December. Again, it’s better that we’re ready when the time comes. If not, we can always go online—that’s still a consideration, but since the cinema operators are among our partners, screening the films in movie houses is still the first option.”

Ferrer also discussed the possibility of creating outdoor cinemas for the festival. “Imagine big open spaces where families can project and watch things,” he said. “During this pandemic, we can be very creative. Of course, we wish they will successfully revive the industry.”

Sarah Geronimo

Sarah Geronimo

Singer-actress Sarah Geronimo had requested to undergo rapid antibody testing, along with all the members of the production team who worked on her newly released infomercial for the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Inquirer Entertainment learned on Tuesday.

Prior to the shoot of her 60-minute infomercial, which is part of the agency’s “Sama Na, Census Na” campaign, Sarah’s team had asked for everyone to be tested, as well as for the studio where she worked in to be disinfected. Fortunately, everyone was cleared.

“We noticed that she had been very warm [to the staff and crew] during the shoot. Although we weren’t there physically because of quarantine restrictions, we were able to watch the whole process on video,” said Minette Esquivias, officer in charge of the Censuses and Technical Coordination Office.

Negotiations with Sarah’s talent management team began in January, while the actual shoot took place in March. “Her call time was 10 a.m., but she arrived before that. We were surprised because she already memorized her entire script—her lines were long and she had to record them without any cuts. She came prepared. She was finished in only a few hours,” said Esquivias.

As to why the agency had asked Sarah to help in urging the public to participate in the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) starting this September, Esquivias said: “Sarah is supported by people in all forms of media, including social media. Her reach is wide.”

Chief statistical specialist for population and housing statistics Joseph Cajita clarified that there was “nothing political” about commissioning Sarah to be the ambassador of the PSA’s “Sama Na, Census Na” campaign.

He pointed out that the campaign aims “to engage millennials like Sarah to participate in this nationwide activity,” Cajita added. “We wished we could get both Sarah and her husband Matteo Guidicelli to endorse the campaign, but we needed more funds for that.”

“We are aware that Sarah is known in all the social classes. That’s why we think she will be effective in convincing everyone to participate in the census,” said officer in charge for National Censuses Service Florante Varona, who also composed the campaign jingle of the same title.

Aside from the infomercial, launched during the virtual press conference on Tuesday were the CPH dance video and music video, which was shot before the lockdown.

Starting September, members of all households and institutional populations shall be counted to determine their respective demographics and socioeconomic characteristics. Mandated by Executive Order No. 352 and Republic Act. No. 10625, the PSA will undertake this process by collecting, compiling, evaluating, analyzing, publishing and disseminating data through the 2020 Census of Population and Housing. —Marinel Cruz
