MANILA, Philippines  — April Boy Regino, the multiplatinum-selling singer who achieved phenomenal success and earned the moniker “Jukebox Idol” in the 1990s, died on Sunday at the Metro Antipolo Hospital and Medical Center in Rizal province. He was 59.

In a Facebook post, Regino’s wife, Madelyn, disclosed that her husband succumbed to acute respiratory failure and had been dealing with stage 5 chronic kidney disease.

“No more pain for you, Love. You said you still wanted to live because you wanted to be with me. Why did you leave me?” Madelyn wrote in Filipino.

The Inquirer sought Madelyn for a statement but had not received a response as of this writing.

Born Dennis Regino Magloyuan Magdaraog, Regino spent his childhood living in a railroad shanty in Caloocan City. In hopes of helping his family, he decided to quit school after Grade 6 to focus on joining amateur singing competitions and stage shows.

At 18, he worked as an entertainer in Japan. He stayed there for about seven years, before returning to the Philippines to try his luck in the local mainstream scene. In 1993, the singer-songwriter had his first hit, “Sana’y Laging Magkapiling,” as part of The April Boys—the trio he formed with his brothers Vingo and Jimmy Regino.

“This is a sad day. Kuya April Boy is gone,” Vingo wrote in Filipino on Facebook.

April Boy would go on to pursue a career as a solo artist. He scored a string of massive singles, including “Umiiyak ang Puso,” “Paano ang Puso Ko” and his most memorable, “‘Di ‘Ko Kayang Tanggapin,” whose catchy melody was amplified by an equally catchy dance move that had Regino — and his audience — criss-crossing their arms above their heads during the chorus.

Postfame, in 2004, he migrated to the United States with his family, but returned to the Philippines in 2010 to help his son JC fulfill his dream of becoming a singer.

Regino spent his last 11 years battling various illnesses. In 2009, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, from which he eventually recovered. In 2013, he was hospitalized after suffering a congestive heart failure, and later on advised by doctors to stop performing.

His eyesight also deteriorated due to complications from diabetes.

Tributes poured for Regino on social media, shortly after news of his death broke out. INQ

Sarah Geronimo

In a recent virtual interview that we attended, Sarah Geronimo was asked if having babies or raising kids was already on top of her priorities, now that she’s married to Matteo Guidicelli.

“Not just yet,” she said. “Unang una sa lahat, we want to save first. Before the kids come, we want to enjoy this stage in our lives as husband and wife. We hoped we’d have enough time to enjoy each other’s company. Pero biglang nag-lockdown, so we didn’t get to travel and enjoy married life as much as we would have if not for this pandemic.

“I even joked that it felt like Matt and I have already been married for 10 years because we were together 24/7. Gusto sana naming makapag-ipon for our travel funds. Ang galing nga ng asawa ko—he’s very organized. He’ll say, ‘Let’s set these funds for groceries, for our needs at home, etc.”

“Then, we also want to build our own home. We’ve set our priorities … medyo nakakalula po. But if you plan ahead and organize your priorities well enough, everything will follow.” INQ

Matteo Guidicelli

Actor-triathlete Matteo Guidicelli stressed this when asked about how he and Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo are handling their finances now that they are married.

“You and your partner should be transparent. Don’t hide anything from each other,” the 30-year-old actor declared at his virtual media launch as an ambassador of Sun Life Philippines’ Newlywed Starter Pack, a bundle of financial solutions ideal for those who are starting a family or saving up for their future milestones.

“I believe in two people synergizing and becoming one, in becoming better people together.”

He added: “I believe in sharing, so what’s mine is hers. If I go to work today, whatever I bring home is now for my family, for our future. My no. 1 priority today is my wife, not my parents anymore. It’s very important to have that mindset when you’re starting a family.”

Matteo said it’s also necessary to reward oneself after working so hard. “I recently bought a really nice TV. It’s very expensive, but it’s worth it. Aside from that, the plants we have here at home are also kind of pricey. We’re trying to create a garden here,” he said.

In terms of controlling each other’s spending, Matteo said they’ve set boundaries. “A good balance between spending and saving is necessary. We guide each other when it comes to this matter. We remind each other about life’s realities. Together, we determine what we need and don’t need.”

Matteo laughed off rumors that his 9-month-old marriage to Sarah is now on the rocks. The couple was married in Christian rites in a church in Taguig City on Feb. 20, 2019. They had kept to themselves the details of their controversial union so intensely that even Matteo’s family found out about it only the day prior. Even Sarah’s family was kept in the dark.

“We popularized the secret wedding!” he quipped.

“Everything is great. Every day is a blessing. I’m grateful for the fact that I wake up every day with this beautiful person beside me. Now is a wonderful time,” he said.

“In fact, I recommend marriage to everybody, as long as you’re sure you’ve found the perfect person, as long as you are able to synergize with that person,” Matteo explained, adding that it’s really difficult to achieve a perfect relationship. “That’s what makes ours really exciting. Of course, there are days when you quarrel, when you wish that it wasn’t happening; but I think it’s all part of it. You just have to learn how to go through it. It’s easy. If you’re the husband, you just say, ‘It’s my fault,’” he said, laughing.

Turning serious, Matteo insisted that “being humble does help. You admit that you were wrong and then learn from your mistakes. You also want to be proactive all the time, so you should not dwell on the past. You don’t bring up the past. You try to grow together.”

As to whether they plan to have a baby soon, especially since his sister Giorgia gave birth to a girl recently, Matteo quipped: “I pray to have one next week. Seriously though, we’re not really trying to have one right now. We’re just living the moment, enjoying each other’s company. To be honest, we may have been boyfriend-girlfriend for a long time but we never really got to spend much time together then. That’s why we’re not rushing. We just saw my sister give birth. We want to savor that. I can’t wait to have our own, but in God’s time. We’ll see.”

Matteo, however, proudly said that if ever the baby comes sooner than they expected, they are financially ready. “It’s important to be ready for things like that. We’ve been blessed because we’ve been working for a long time and were able to save enough. I’m lucky, too, that my parents have taught me how to invest properly in different ventures.”

Asked how they tried to lift up each other’s spirits during this time of a pandemic, Matteo replied: “We had wanted to have a lot of adventures together. We felt sad at the beginning that we couldn’t travel together. This is something we’ve not had the chance to do when we were still in our boyfriend-girlfriend stage. But we also reminded ourselves of how blessed we are. Because of this, the time we spend together now, even if we’re just at home, means so much more. The time for travel will come eventually. For now, we want to focus on health and safety.”

Matteo said having Sarah as his wife “made me a better person. She always reminds me about humility, about keeping my feet on the ground. Dati kasi ang tigas ko, but for her, I now want to become more understanding,” he declared.

He also said he was willing to change his lifestyle to accommodate Sarah’s interests. “Sarah sometimes likes to stay late at night to watch films. I try to watch with her, but I always fall asleep ahead. It’s because I wake up early at 5 a.m. I’m proud of her. Lately, she’s already up between 5:30 and 6 a.m., and we go out to run. I think I have to exert more effort to stay up late and watch films with her, too,” Matteo shared with reporters.

When asked which particular part of his life would he like to redo, given the chance, Matteo said: “I don’t have any regrets. All the ups and downs in my life happened for a reason. Without them, I would not be able to find Sarah. I guess my only regret was not being more educated in accounting. I wish I had paid more attention to accounting class before. As a husband, I find it very useful.” INQ

Jamir Garcia

It was the news many people wished was fake.

“I still can’t believe it,” singer-songwriter Kean Cipriano said of Slapshock frontman Jamir Garcia, whose lifeless body was found inside his home in Quezon City last Nov. 26. “This is shocking news.”

In the passing of the 42-year-old nu metal icon, the industry lost not only a great musician but a humble and supportive human being.

“I have the utmost respect for this person. He wasn’t just a skillful musician. He accorded me respect, which I didn’t readily get from other artists, especially when I was starting out,” the Callalily lead vocalist recalled in a Facebook post written in Filipino.

“During the time when I felt like we weren’t being taken seriously by artists who came before us, Jamir was one of the few who made me feel I was part of this industry.”

Kean also remembered with fondness their past conversations and the valuable, “no bullshit” advice Jamir would give him.

“I remember, one time while we were eating together at an airport, he told me, ‘Don’t be afraid to turn down offers that aren’t worth your value, because bigger and better things would surely come later. Don’t ever compromise your value,’” Kean related. “I knew that it wasn’t just a business advice, but a life advice. And it’s something I carry with me until now.”

Jamir was reportedly found lifeless in his home in Quezon City. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We’re saddened by the untimely death of our beloved Jamir Garcia. As the family mourns, may we humbly ask everyone to respect his memory,” Jamir’s brother Sonboy Garcia said in a statement. The singer’s partner, Sojina Jaya Crisostomo, posted a photo of them together on Instagram, and wrote: “Mahal na mahal kita. Hanggang sa muli, asawa ko. Ipaglalaban kita habang nabubuhay ako.”The Inquirer sought Slapshock’s management for a statement, but didn’t receive a response as of this writing. Known for his stage presence and showmanship, Jamir joined the band—also composed of Lean Ansing, Jerry Basco, Lee Nadela and Chi Evora—as lead vocalist in 1998. And together, they became one of the leading bands in the local rock music landscape, with their brand of sound that meshed hip-hop and metal.

Over the course of its 23-year career, Slapshock released seven studio albums and brought the classics “Agent Orange,” “Cariño Brutal” and “Sigaw.” Slapshock was also the first Filipino band to perform at the Dubai Desert Rock Fest in 2008.

However, last October, the band confirmed that it was formally disbanding on August 2021, citing disputes regarding royalties. “For creating a new lane, paving the way for bands like mine to have an opportunity to be heard… For inspiring not only your fans, but musicians as well, daghang salamat sa tanan, senyor,” Urbandub’s Gabby Alipe said in an Instagram post.

Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar related that, back in the day, he tried to put up a tough front whenever he saw Jamir out of “intimidation.”

“Hindi ko trip ‘yung banda mo and I always made sure to be snob and cocky to you—or I would at least try, because I’m not really like that,” he said in a Facebook post. “I acted that way only because I was intimidated by you, your band, your crowd.”But Jamir responded with nothing but kindness, Chito said. “Pero kahit anong gawin kong angas sa ‘yo, you would still always be consistently kind and soft-spoken. So I had no choice but to be kind to you, too, because my smug act wasn’t working.

“And I had no choice but be impressed by his band, because they’re professional and hardworking,” he added. “I’m sad you’re gone too soon, but I’m happy I met you.”

Reg Rubio, frontman of the nu metal band Greyhoundz—one of Slapshock’s contemporaries—said that, while he and Jamir had a rivalry, it never went beyond the stage.

“We competed against each other with our hearts out, always at each other’ throats. But the friendship was real,” he stressed. “Kapatirang tunay. Pahinga, kapatid.” INQ

japan subway k-drama advertisement

SEOUL — With many Korean dramas and movies heading to Netflix, the platform, with services in 190 countries, is becoming a major medium for the spread of Korean pop culture.

Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency’s African sector recently mentioned Netflix as one of the reasons for the popularity of Korean culture in South Africa.

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs announced in October that South Korea’s favorability is at 60 on a zero-to-100 scale, the highest yet. Besides favorability rising because of Korea’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Korean programs reaching US audiences through Netflix was seen as a key factor.

“Netflix has brought Korean television shows into more US homes than ever before,” said CCGA.

Netflix’s role in spreading Hallyu is even bigger in Japan, where Korean movies and dramas on Netflix are capturing Japanese viewers. For example, tvN’s hit drama “Crash Landing on You” starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin started showing on Netflix in February. In addition, Korean TV dramas such as JTBC’s “Itaewon Class” and tvN’s “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” among others, have been at the top of the country’s Netflix charts for months, with the main characters’ fashion and hairstyles grabbing particular attention.

With the success of Korean content in Japan, Netflix streamed “Netflix K Swamp Festival” online on Nov. 14, hosted by Japanese comedian Shingo Fujimori, which showed behind-the-scenes stories of popular K-drama productions and took a look at what makes them attractive. Also shown were actors of the dramas thanking the fans.

Popularity of Korean dramas is not limited to specific regions. For example, tvN drama “Start-Up” featuring Suzy and Nam Joo-hyuk is currently among the 10 most popular Netflix shows in the world, according to data analytics Flix Patrol.

“A new platform, Netflix, has allowed Hallyu to go beyond fandom culture and evolved it into pop culture,” said Hong Seok-kyeong, a professor at Seoul National University’s department of communication, in an online forum held in September. “These services have created new consumers and value that go beyond space, time and genre, contributing to the expansion of a new Hallyu.”

Meanwhile, with the highly anticipated Korean sci-fi blockbuster “Space Sweepers” starring actors Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri will show exclusively on Netflix. “The Call,” another highly anticipated thriller, began showing this weekend.

Alanis Morissette, John lennon, yoko ono

Alanis Morissette is spreading the Christmas cheer with her family in the music video of her cover of the classic John Lennon Christmas song, “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).”

The song, released in 1971 by the John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band, came after years of peace activism by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. After they got married in March 1969, the couple spent their honeymoon in an Amsterdam hotel and staged “bed-ins” to protest wars. Footage of their bed-in in Montreal was used in a documentary called “Bed Peace” by Ono.

Morissette’s video is inspired by those bed-ins: clips include her and her family snuggled together, with the poster “bed peace” hanging on their window, akin to that of Lennon and Ono’s protest. The posters “war is over” and “if you want it” are also seen on the window — Lennon and Ono’s slogan as they campaigned for world peace.

Home videos of Christmastime and clips of family and friends singing in their own homes were collected and incorporated as a whole for Morissette’s version, resulting in an endearing video, and which may be refreshing for those who only know of the Canadian rocker’s angsty roots in the 1990s.

The song cover comes also as Morissette’s breakthrough rock album “Jagged Little Pill” turned 25 this year. It is among the biggest bestselling albums worldwide, bearing the hits “You Oughta Know,” “Ironic,” “Hand in My Pocket” and “Head Over Feet.”

Morissette was scheduled to perform in the Philippines last April 6 and 7, but the shows were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The concert dates have been moved for next year, Dec. 7 and 8, 2021. JB

Rachel Peters

Beauty queen Rachel Peters aired her heartbreak after a dog that she recently rescued died today, Nov 29.

Peters, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in 2017, had been calling for blood donors for her dog Milo, whom she said was in critical condition in her Instagram Stories.

She met Milo after spending her birthday last October at the animal shelter Pawssion Project in Bulacan, which saves dogs in pounds from being euthanized. After falling in love with Milo, the dog became her “first rescue pup.”

Pawssion Project joined Peters’s call for blood donors, stating on Instagram yesterday that Milo had erlichia, a tick-borne disease “common with pound rescues.”

She announced Milo’s passing today on Instagram, posting photos and videos of the adventures they had in their short time together.

Peters noted that in her loss, she was able to save a life. “I lost my little love this morning, but was in the right place at the right time to save a drowning surfer because I did a little paddle out for you.”

“Milo girl, I’m so sorry I wasn’t with you when you left the physical world but I hope you know I loved you more than words could describe.”

For Peters, the loss “hurts extra hard,” in part because she was not around when Milo died, and that she wanted to give her a “long, happy life” to compensate for the tough life she had.

Milo was pampered with Peters, traveling with the beauty queen by boat and plane. She even accompanied Peters to Camarines Sur for relief efforts.

Milo was among the dogs and cats on death row at the City of San Jose Del Monte pound last October. During Pawssion Project’s rescue operations, Milo was the first dog it got from the pound.

The animal welfare group was able to raise enough funds to cover the adoption fees of the 100 dogs on death row at the SJDM pound at the time. It advocates for no-kill pounds and for animal lovers to adopt dogs to keep them from being homeless. JB

LONDON — Dave Prowse, the British actor behind the menacing black mask of Star Wars villain Darth Vader has died at the age of 85, his agent said Sunday.

A former body-builder turned actor, Prowse’s towering stature at almost two meters (6.5 feet) clinched him the role of the infamous antagonist in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the epic saga, tweeted that he was “so sad to hear David Prowse has passed.”

“He was a kind man & much more than Darth Vader,” Hamill wrote.

“Actor-Husband-Father-Member of the Order of the British Empire-3 time British Weightlifting Champion. He loved his fans as much as they loved him.”

Prowse’s agent Thomas Bowington announced the news on Facebook on Sunday, writing: “It’s with great sadness that we have to announce that our client Dave Prowse… passed away yesterday morning at the age of 85.”

“May the force be with him, always!” the agent later told the BBC.

Bowington added that Prowse’s death following a short illness was “a truly and deeply heart-wrenching loss for us and millions of fans all over the world”.

But while he donned the glossy black armor and cape, Prowse’s strong western English accent meant the filmmakers turned to U.S. actor James Earl Jones for the chilling voice that would emerge from behind the mask.

Prowse nevertheless remained attached to the character, telling AFP in 2013 that he was “the greatest big-screen villain of all time”.

‘Remember the bad guys’

Prowse was born in the southwest English city of Bristol on July 1, 1935, to a working-class family, winning a scholarship to the prestigious local school Bristol Grammar.

He soon developed a love for weightlifting and went on to represent his country at the Commonwealth Games in the early 1960s before forging a career in Hollywood.

He trained Christopher Reeve for the role of Superman and was reportedly spotted by Star Wars director George Lucas as an extra in 1971’s “A Clockwork Orange.”

Lucas asked him to audition for the roles of Vader and hairy giant Chewbacca, with Prowse choosing the dark side because “you always remember the bad guys,” he once told the BBC.

The Peter Mayhew Foundation, set up in memory of the actor who played Chewbacca, tweeted a picture of Mayhew with Prowse and their co-star Kenny Baker, along with the message: “RIP Dave Prowse.”

“I hope you’re up there sharing a pint and a story with the boys,” it added.

At home, Prowse is equally well remembered for playing the “Green Cross Code” Man, a superhero created as part of a public information campaign to teach children road safety.

He played the role for almost 20 years and earned an MBE in 2000.

Other film credits include 1972’s “Minotaur” and 1977’s “Jabberwocky,” and he also appeared in many TV shows including “The Saint” and “The Benny Hill Show.”

Since the original Star Wars trilogy was released in the late 1970s and early 80s, Prowse had traveled the world meeting hardcore fans.

However, it was reported that he later fell out with director Lucas and was banned from official events in 2010.

Nadine Lustre denounced comments made against a friend simply because James Reid joined her for dinner.

Artist Lucy Fisch shared this weekend a photo of her “friendsgiving” gathering that included James, his sister Lauren and her boyfriend Gab Banal.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lux Fisch (@halucynation)

Instagram users, supposedly fans of Lustre, thought that the actress-singer was left out of the dinner and wrote comments against Fisch.

Though the said comments appear to have already been taken down, Lustre’s straightforward responses are still on Fisch’s post.

“Uhm… I was actually invited #jokesonUlol #2020namagbagokana,” she said. “Haters who use fake accounts don’t have balls. #sadlyf.”

“Also, if you sh*t on other people, you are NOT my fan. No exceptions,” she wrote. “We don’t welcome hate in our house.”

“[The] goddess has spoken,” Fisch replied, to which Lustre said, “[Love] u forevs.”

Lustre and James announced their breakup in January 2020. Some fans hope they have reunited, as the two have continued to spend time together and work on music under James’s label Careless. However, both have stayed mum on their relationship status. JB

Trina Legaspi of “Goin Bulilit” has gotten engaged to her longtime boyfriend.

The 26-year-old actress, known as Hopia from the kids’ comedy program, announced yesterday, Nov. 28 on Instagram that boyfriend Ryan Jarina proposed to her last Nov. 22. Jarina is CEO of Ark Diversified and Automotor Group Inc., which operates Chevrolet Commonwealth.

She shared photos of her looking emotional as Jarina proposed to her in front of a backdrop of pink and gold balloons, some of which spelled out “Will you marry me?”

“Without a doubt, in a heartbeat, I said YES!” she said. “I can’t wait to marry my first and only love.”

She admitted that she was so surprised that she thought the proposal arrangements were not for her.

The engagement comes after she brought up the idea of marriage to her parents in a Nov. 20 vlog on her YouTube channel “Hello Hopia.”

She took up a fan’s question that asked when Legaspi could get married. Her Daddy Ding seemed open to the idea, saying that it should happen at the “right age.” He also said he wanted to have grandkids while he was not too old yet.

Meanwhile, Mommy Minnie was hesitant. She said she would rather have Legaspi marry in 2022 and hoped by then that the pandemic was over.

Legaspi was on “Goin Bulilit” alongside Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes. She took a break from showbiz to study communication arts at Miriam College. Besides going back to acting, she vlogs on YouTube where she has over 40,000 subscribers. JB

Sen. Manny Pacquiao (second from right) with sons Jimuel and Michael, and wife Jinkee

Sen. Manny Pacquiao has no problem with his two eldest sons, Jimuel and Michael, pursuing show biz. He and his wife, Jinkee, are actually supportive of it, he said.

Just not boxing, the boxer-turned-politician stressed—“that’s against my wishes.”

“My firstborn, Jimuel, really wants to box … experience amateur competition. But if you will ask me, I don’t want him to. Boxing is a tough sport. I let him experience the rigorous training, so he can realize that it’s not easy,” he related in a video group interview, which introduced him as the newest endorser of the ubiquitous online multiplayer battle game “Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.”

Not only is boxing punishing, but also dangerous, he pointed out. And his fears aren’t unfounded. “It’s a serious sport that can get you killed … like what happened to my friend. It can happen and can’t be totally avoided,” said Pacquiao, who lost his close friend, Eugene Barutag, after a bout in 1995. They were only 16 then.

“Boxing is one of a kind. You have to be a true warrior in order to sustain yourself and fight in the ring. You don’t just go stepping into a fight. You need to have focus and make a lot of sacrifices. You need hard work and discipline—all these qualities,” he said. “I don’t want my children to experience that.”

Jimuel, 19, has expressed interest in acting and has been undergoing workshops. Michael, 18, is an aspiring rapper and has already put out his first album. And this early, the two are already getting a taste of public scrutiny that goes with being in the limelight.

Jimuel’s relationship with ex-girlfriend, actress Heaven Peralejo, was fodder for tabloid gossip. And though Michael’s Wish 107.5 Bus performance of his song “Hate” drew raves and 13 million views on YouTube, it also attracted critics, who think that he only benefits from his father’s name. They have to be ready for these, Pacquiao said. “Michael isn’t used to that. There are bashers and sometimes he can’t handle it; he gets sad about it,” he said of his second child.

You can’t please everyone. That’s one of the pieces of advice he gives his children. “I just make them understand that not everyone in social media will be supportive. Some will bash them. And I tell them to be understanding,” he said. “This has happened to me, from the beginning of my career until now… I try to draw inspiration from that.”

Pacquiao has three other kids: daughters Princess, 14, and Queenie, 11; and son Israel, 6. And while his children’s lives can never be more different from the life of poverty he and Jinkee led growing up, Pacquiao makes it a point to show them where their parents came from.

“We teach them household chores. We had them study in General Santos City (his hometown) for two years, so they could realize that life isn’t just about comfort and luxury, which they enjoy now. I want them to know the kind of life we had so that they grow up humble and helpful to others,” he said. “Thankfully, God is good, and the children are kind and respectful.”

Meanwhile, Pacquiao said he accepted the role as “Mobile Legends” ambassador mostly because of his kids. “I already know of the game even before they got in touch, because Jimuel plays the game on his phone, and regularly streams with friends. So, why not be a part of what my son loves?” he said.

He’s not that strict with his children when it comes to gaming, but they should be able to manage their time responsibly, stressed Pacquiao. “They just have to be responsible, and make time for themselves, their family and their studies.”

Ruffa Gutierrez on the set of ‘Stay in Love’

Taking a swab test for COVID-19 is something that one will never get used to. Take it from actress Ruffa Gutierrez who has experienced this several times since the start of the lockdown in March.

“My nose is so kawawa! My first swab test was when we had everyone in our house tested. My mom (Annabel Rama) said we had to do it, even though I never went out prior to the lockdown. She said it was to make sure everyone is OK,” Ruffa told Inquirer Entertainment.

The test requires inserting a 6-inch-long swab into the cavity of the nose and mouth for 15 seconds in order to collect nasal specimens.

Ruffa said she also got swab tested every time she went into the lock-in set of a particular project and also upon exit. She has already been part of two lock-in set productions (“Love thy Woman” and “The House Arrest of Us”), and is currently in another for the TV5 series “Stay in Love” with Maris Racal and Kokoy de Santos.

“You also do this when you’re feeling sick, and when you have to go to the dentist,” she explained.

“It’s kind of painful. While I’ve encountered health workers who have already mastered doing it, there were also those who seemed to be taking their sweet time with the swab in there,” she said, laughing. “I’m just thankful that it’s always negative when I get the results. What happens these days is that when you test positive, you’re automatically taken out of a project.”

Ruffa further said: “Even if it’s an inconvenience, it’s needed talaga. You have to make sure that everyone is healthy and safe. Even though you wear masks during rehearsals, you will still need to take them off during takes.”

“Actually, I still have to get used to all the protocols that we have on the set, especially the fact that we all have to bring your own stuff,” she added. “It’s much more work (taping) because you have very limited people with you, but it’s better because you know everyone is safe.”

Life will definitely change for you once you figure on the “List of Sexy Celebrities Who are Actually Gay But Won’t Come Out Because of Their Hunky Image”—just like what happened to Lovable Trooper (LT).

Whenever LT would go clubbing (prepandemic) with a certain group, these so-called friends of his would look out of the corner of their eyes to check on whether LT was showing signs of being gay, especially when he was already tipsy.

Among themselves, they would crack jokes about LT being gay and then would swear by their “gaydar” (gay-detecting radar) that this observation was true.

It’s sad that people—especially those whom LT considers special enough for him to hang out with—would still choose to believe in rumors, even though LT has repeatedly denied having a secret affair with another actor-model.

SLAPSHOCK (From left) Jerry Basco, Chi Evora, Jamir Garcia, Leandro Ansing and Lee Nadela

MANILA, Philippines — Despite their differences, Slapshock bassist Lee Nadela said they had more good times with local heavy metal band’s frontman Jamir Garcia, who died on Thursday.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Nadela penned his farewell message over the tragic death of his bandmate, who took his own life in Quezon City.

“We may have had differences, pero mas mahaba at mas marami kaming mabuting pinagsamahan for 23 years. Mahal ko siya na parang kapatid at nalungkot ako na ito ang pinili niyang paraan. God knows wala sa isip ko na sa ganito hahantong ang lahat,” said Nadela, who changed his profile picture to black as a symbol of grieving over his friend’s demise.

(We had more good times for 23 years. I loved him like a brother and I was saddened about the way he died. God knows I did not know this would happen.)

I am deeply saddened over the tragedy that happened to my friend and bandmate Jamir Garcia. We may have had differences,…

Posted by Lee Nadela on Friday, November 27, 2020

Meanwhile, Nadela also took to social media to dismiss allegations against him and Slapshock guitarist Jerry Basco supposedly disclosed by Garcia’s wife, Jaya, during a live Facebook video on Friday.

In the video, Jaya did not identify names but she claimed that her husband was bashed by “envious people.”

“Regarding Jaya’s Facebook video post yesterday, please don’t accuse me and Jerry Basco of wrongdoing, when we were just speaking out the truth and the injustice done to us,” said Nadela.

“Huwag mo sanang gawing galit ang lungkot na nararamdaman nating lahat, at ipasa ang galit sa amin o maghanap ng sisisihin dahil wala naman talagang nakakaalam ng tunay na dahilan kung bakit nagawa ni Jamir yun,” he added.

“Jaya, ang mga binitiwan mong salita against us ay walang basehan, either tinatago mo ang katotohanan or wala kang alam at all sa nangyari sa band namin,” he went on.

(Please don’t turn the sadness we’re all feeling into anger and pass the anger to us or look for someone to blame because no one really knows why Jamir did that. Jaya, your words against have no basis—either you’re hiding the truth or you don’t really know what happened to our band at all.)

The bassist also vowed that he will answer all “baseless accusations” against them.

“We will answer all your baseless accusations and refute it with concrete evidence, na dapat sa korte ipepresenta (that should be presented in court). Kung sinasabi mong may evidence ka rin na hawak, sabay nating ilabas (if you say you also have evidence, then let’s disclose it together),” he said.

Nevertheless, he said: “For now, with all due respect to Jamir and family, we will mourn his [Jamir] passing.”

Based on a previous news report, it was Nadela who disclosed that there were issues among band members, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said that Slapshock reportedly disbanded after 23 years.

Courteney Cox surprised her fans as she re-enacted her popular turkey dance from the hit series “Friends” to celebrate Thanksgiving this year.

Cox, who played Monica, danced with a raw turkey stuck on her head in the popular episode called “The One with All the Thanksgivings” back in November 1998. More than two decades later, Cox posted a video of herself re-creating the moment on her Instagram page yesterday, Nov, 27.

“Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope you’re having a great day,” she said.

“I’m feeling so thankful, and also, if I get one more goddamn GIF with a turkey on my head dancing like a f*cking fool,” she joked before showing the scene, “I’m just gonna snap.”

“So anyhow, since I’m the symbol of Thanksgiving, here you go, hope it makes you happy,” Cox added.

She then cut to a clip of her dancing with a turkey on her head, complete with sunglasses, while the “Friends” theme song played.

Following her post, her “Friends” costar Lisa Kudrow said, “You DID THAT!!”

Cox and Kudrow are set to film a special “Friends” reunion with their costars—Jennifer Aniston, Mathew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc—for HBO Max. The highly anticipated reunion was set to premiere this year, but had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perry, who portrayed Chandler, announced that it has now been pushed to March 2021. “Friends” aired its last episode on May 6, 2004.  /ra

Jamir Garcia, Jaya Garcia

Jaya Garcia, the wife of Slapshock frontman Jamir, has spoken up about the untimely death of her husband last Thursday, Nov. 26.

Police reported that the 42-year-old musician took his own life in his home in Quezon City. After his aunt found his lifeless body, he was rushed to the Metro North Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

A day after, Jaya held a Facebook Live session on her page to open up on the musician’s sudden passing. Though she intended to explain details surrounding Jamir’s death in full, she admitted that she still could not bear to do it.

“Gusto ko lang sana talaga ipagtanggol si Jamir, at linawin ang lahat,” Jaya stated. “[Pero] mas naramdaman kong mas magiging masaya siya kung aalalahanin na lang natin ang masasayang nagawa niya.”

(I really wanted to defend Jamir and clarify everything. But I feel that he will be happier if we just remember the good things he did.)

Posted by JamirJaya Garcia on Thursday, November 26, 2020

Jaya did not clarify what issues she was referring to, but noted that it involved money. She also stressed that Jamir would have wanted her to keep silent because he believed that justice would prevail in the end. However, Jaya said she could not stop herself from defending her husband.

“Hindi niya deserve ang nangyari sa kanya. Sinira siya ng mga taong inggit, pero [hanggang] sa huling hininga [kayo] padin ang prinotektahan niya,” Jaya stated.

(He did not deserve what happened to him. He was bashed by envious people, but until his last breath he still protected you.)

Jaya also assured Jamir’s fans that she was fine but was determined to air her side on Jamir’s passing and the supposed issues surrounding it.

“LALABAS DIN ANG KATOTOHANAN!” she stressed. “Hindi habangbuhay maghahari-harian ang kasamaan niyo.”

(THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT! Your evil deeds will not prevail.)

As she ended her video, Jaya took the time to thank Slapshock’s fans and Jamir’s relatives for their messages of support.

Slapshock started their career in 1997 and have since produced several hits such as “Cariño Brutal,” “Anino Mo” and “Agent Orange.” The group is also well-known for paving the way for the popularization of heavy metal in the country.   /ra

Vice Ganda affirmed his love for boyfriend Ion Perez through a heartfelt message on the latter’s birthday yesterday, Nov. 27.

Though Vice had hoped to write an extravagant post for Perez, he instead chose to keep it simple yet meaningful.

“Nung dumating ka naging pinakamaganda kung ano [yung] pinakasimple,” he said on his Instagram page yesterday alongside a selfie of Perez and a photo of them.

(When you arrived, the simplest things became the most beautiful.)

“Kung ano [yung] totoo [iyon] ang maganda. Kung ano yung sinsero [iyon] ang maganda,” Vice added. “Kaya di ko na aartehan.”

(Whatever is true is what is beautiful. Whatever is sincere is what is beautiful. That is why I will not make this extravagant.)

“Happy Birthday Benigno!!!” Vice said. He also mentioned that he constantly prays to the Lord to care for Perez and allow him to be peaceful at all times.

“At sana bigyan [niya] pa tayo ng mahabang panahong magkasama. Kasi gusto kong makapiling ka pa,” the TV host expressed.

(And I hope He gives us more time to be together. Because I still want to be with you.)

“Gusto kong mapasaya pa kita. Gusto kong mahalin mo pa. Gusto kong mahalin ka pa. Dahil tuwing mahal kita doon ako masigla at masaya,” he added. “At [hangga’t] mahal kita yung mundo ko mananatiling maganda!”

(I still want to make you happy. I still want you to love. I still want to love you. Because when I love you, that is when I am alive and happy. And as long as I love you, my world will stay beautiful!)

“Mahal na mahal ka ni Tutoy (Tutoy loves you very much)!” Vice said, referring to his own childhood nickname.

The two met back in 2018 on the noontime variety show “It’s Showtime,” where Vice serves as one of the hosts. They celebrated their second anniversary last month.  /ra

KC Concepcion raised P200,000 to provide boats for fishermen in Bicol who were severely affected by Super Typhoon Rolly and Typhoon Ulysses.

The actress raised the amount through her jewelry line, Avec Moi by Kristina, which dedicated its sales from Nov. 17 to 27 to the fishing communities. Concepcion then handed over the money to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Philippines’ (WWF Philippines), as per her Instagram post yesterday, Nov. 27.

Using the donations, the group will purchase 2,511 fiberglass boats for the fishermen as part of its Project Sulong campaign.

Along with the monetary donation, Concepcion will also provide 200 packs of relief goods to communities in Cagayan Valley. Each pack is worth P500 and will be sent to the typhoon-hit region through the Office of the Vice President’s Kaya Natin! Movement.

Concepcion has been actively taking part in various relief efforts since the recent typhoons ravaged parts of Luzon. Aside from donating a portion of her jewelry line’s proceeds, she is auctioning off some pre-loved gowns as well to raise more funds for fishing communities in need.  /ra
